AMERICAN POCKET WATCHES
Buying Your First Hampden Pocket Watch
Discover the maker. Understand the watch. Choose with care.
The illustrated edition is being completed. This page previews its scope, not a finished product. Purchases are not yet available.
History first
The guide begins with Hampden's story: the people behind the watches, John Dueber and the Canton years, the company's decline and asset sale, and the later survival of the Hampden name.
The aim is to help you decide whether the history speaks to you, not simply whether a watch might rise in value.
A collector's reference
The collecting sections follow the history, with collecting tiers, identification clues, movement and case research, dial references, and buying cautions. Clickable contents will help readers return to the section they need.
Historical photographs and quotations will be included where their provenance and reproduction rights have been confirmed.
A checklist to use before buying
- Request a clear movement photograph and a legible movement serial number.
- Record case markings separately from movement information.
- Ask for clear photographs of the dial, case edges, and any damage.
- Request documentation for claimed servicing.
- Allow for shipping, fees, and possible service costs in your budget.
If a seller is unfamiliar with opening the case, ask them to have it photographed by someone qualified. Forcing a case or crown can cause permanent damage.
